When a couple is considering a prenuptial agreement there is generally a great deal of tension created in the relationship because almost always it is only one of the two who wants it. A prenuptial agreement is a written legal contract that states a list of each person's property and financial standings, including debt, before the marriage and then creates a clause for after the marriage. Meaning whatever you have now is more than likely what you will have if the marriage is terminated for whatever reason.
Most people do not need a prenuptial agreement but there is a small percentage of wealthy people and business owners out there who do require such a document. Many times it has nothing to do with the person they are marrying but is something that needs to be considered in the event of their death, their spouse could run down the business or re-marry and their new husband or wife could have access to this money. These are all factors that need to be considered for wealthy men and women.
Many people do not take kindly when being asked to sign a prenupt but when it comes down to it, this should make no difference. Marriage is not about the money or property the other person has or does not have. This prenuptial agreement must be created by a lawyer and all factors and clauses must be considered and the document signed before the marriage.
Prenuptial agreements have become far more common these last few years and are steadily becoming a common document in almost all marriages that take place. Many people who have money and many who don't are taking advantage of prenupts for their own reasons such as children, houses, money, etc. For anyone getting married it may be a good idea to take a look at your situation and decide for yourself if a prenuptial agreement is right for you and your new spouse to be.
