In the past the first couple’s dance has always been a simple waltz or fox trot. If the couple was adventurous they may try a more modern dance instead. Today’s trend goes way beyond that. Instead of couples taking traditional dance lessons they are spending the months before their wedding choreographing and practicing their first dance. A popular one recently was to the song “The Time Of My Life” from the movie “Dirty Dancing” and included the famous lift.
The recent surge in choreographed dances may have been spurred partially by the popular television show “Dancing With The Stars”, where stars are paired with professional dancers to compete for the title. The show has been top-rated lately.
What should you do if you want to make your first dance a choreographed dance? First, make sure that both you and your fiancé are game. Next, get start getting some ideas for dances from the movies or from music videos. The trick is to find a song with choreographed dance moves that will fit in well with a wedding. You don’t really want a scary song or one with bad words.
Once you find the song you want you’ll need to start practicing. Plan on practicing at least twice a week for several hours. Allow yourself plenty of time to get ready – figure on three to six months before the wedding date. Some dances include “parts” for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Try to pick a dance that they can easily learn because chances are they aren’t going to have the same desire and enthusiasm to practice that you do.
Some couples take their dance desires to professionals. Here you have not only the help and instruction of a dance instructor but also the use of a large dance floor for practice. Make sure that the DJ knows your plan and that you give him a copy of the exact music that you’ve been practicing to. Always have a fallback plan in case you just aren’t ready in time for the wedding.
